During the summer of 2012, the town of Pacquet will be holding a Come-Home Year reunion. Hundreds of Pacquet natives and friends will be arriving home, some for the first time in years. It will be a time of meeting with family and old friends, and celebration.
Pacquet, a small rural community in Newfoundland, Canada, is located on the north west side of the Baie Verte peninsula. The town was first originated by the French, who founded the land as a small fishing village, and later decided to relocate their families there. As years went by, more and more people decided to relocate to this small town, not only as a fishing village but as a community.
For the past 10-15 years the community of Pacquet, has dealt with a great downfall. Over 80% of our youth moved to the Mainlands to find work, whereas the other 25% are elders, and the 15% left are fisherman, miners, or just young adults who have no plans on ever moving out of the province.
The painting above deals with the theme of "coming home", as it relates to a resident of Pacquet, or any outport Newfoundland community for that matter. Because of the declining fishery, and tough economic conditions, many of us have had to move away to find employment elsewhere.
The artwork explores several elements of a Newfoundland homecoming... the celebration, family visits, meeting with old friends, and familiar childhood places which have been changed by time.
